New NPHS

Although I missed the open house, I had a chance to drive up to the new high school one day last week and get some photos. The road leading to the school building is curvy and tree-lined with new guard rails.

There is still construction going on, even with less than a week until the opening bell.

The school is on the left and the side of the school is the first part of it that comes into view.
The front of the school faces the east toward a small ridge which appears to hide the ball fields from view.

Turning around to face the way I had driven in, I could see the front of the new North Pocono High School.
The front doors are directly down this one-way road. A flag sits to the left and a sign stating "North Pocono High School" to the right.
My guess is that the kids who used to walk a few feet off school property on Church St. to in order to smoke a cigarette are going to be out of luck here.
Looking toward the side door from the lower parking lot, you can see the flag that is just visible on the left in the above photo. Between the flag and the doors are stairs connecting the upper and lower lots.

The end.

Day 1

Matt left yesterday to start the fall semester and with Mike gone, this is the first day I've lived alone in 22 years. No wonder I feel so strange.

But I can always count on family to help me out of any depression(s). This year, Lia starts first grade and John starts kindergarten. Two pretty big milestones!

He may look little in a big classroom but I have no doubt he will fill that classroom with his enthusiasm and curiosity.
Lia is just as excited to be returning to school and was happy to see that the library had stocked some new books. Once home, she enlisted her grandmother in a search for some books that Lia had never read before, especially cookbooks.
Look out, world!

Blueberries

The following was originally posted on Wordpress on August 28, 2009:

Sometime last month I drove up I-84 to the Paupack Berry Farm to pick some blueberries.

Despite looking beautiful, the berries this year were slightly bitter. But it was a hot and sunny day and I was glad I went.

After getting a bucket to fill, I had to cross a small wooden bridge that runs over a creek.

The berry field is in the middle of the woods.

The bushes are planted in rows and each row has a different variety of berry. The ground is very wet and even swampy in some areas.

But thinking of blueberry muffins, blueberry pancakes and blueberry smoothies kept me going!

I took a slow walk back to the stand to pay for the berries.

One of the great things about blueberries is that they are so easy to store. Just pop them in the freezer in baggies and take them out a few minutes before adding them to recipes.  One delicious recipe for blueberry muffins that I can recommend is over at All Recipes called To Die For Blueberry Muffins. Yummy!

After getting home and changing my shoes and socks, I found that some of the flower seeds I'd thrown in the pots on the back porch had bloomed. Since my thumb is definitely not green, this was a big accomplishment for me!
